Hours

  • Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00pm
  • The facility will be closed for all University holidays or whenever the University is closed.
  • The facility will be closed during my vacation time or when I am attending meetings. The dates of these occasions will be posted.

Call (301-367-8408) or e-mail Chere Petty (cpetty1@umbc.edu) to meet and review your project and determine which microscope best fits your imaging needs.
At this first meeting we will set-up the first training session and book the time on the facilities interactive calender which is located on the facilities web page.

In general there will be three training sessions with the third being a practical exam. Training session times vary depending on the experience level of trainee.</address>

Once a user is trained:

  1. The user may sign up for time on the instruments using the interactive calendar. Users should be aware that if a user has indicated “live cells” on their sign up note, there is a chance that the user may have to cancel if their cells don’t grow. They can check with that user if there is no other suitable time open on an instrument.
  2. If a user needs help from the facility manager they must book time with the manager which means that they must sign up for the instrument they need at a time when Chere is NOT already booked doing training on another instrument. Please check your instrument for available time and all of the other instruments for whether Chere is signed up to do training.
  3. When a user has gained sufficient experience with an instrument and has demonstrated to the facility manager that they are responsible in the care and use of the instrument, then, at the discretion of the facility manager (Chere Petty) they will be given after hours privileges for use of the instrument. Some users may progress to this state quickly, other will require months and some users may never be granted after hours privileges. This will depend entirely on the facility manager’s evaluation of the experience, care and responsibility of the user. This policy is necessary because a large number of faculty research programs depend on the successful operation of the instrumentation and careless use that damages equipment hurts all user’s research programs.
  4. Repair and service calls take precedence over regular use. As much as possible regular repair and service will be scheduled ahead and put on the interactive calendar, but since we try to keep costs to a minimum there are occasions when we have to coordinate a service call with another University in order to save on transportation and travel costs for the service people. In these cases it may be necessary to bump a scheduled user since we often do not get notification that a service call can be made until the day of the service.

Cancellation Policy:

  1. The first no show, with no notification: will be forgiven.
  2. Second no show, with no notification: your laboratory will be charged with half the time you booked on the facilities interactive calender.
  3. Third time no show with no notification: your laboratory will be charged the full time you booked on the facilities interactive calender.  The facility will e-mail the user and also cc the P.I. of the laboratory in question each time.
Timely notification means ASAP. With live cell imaging and with some types of staining, only a few hours notice is possible is the user must cancel due to cells not growing or staining not working,. The facility requests that if your imaging falls into these two categories, when you book your reservation you include in the comments section “Live Cell”. This means that it is possible that there is an opening for others to use the instrument if the cells did not grow or the stain did not work.

Methods of Cancellation Notification:

  1. In person
  2. E-mail (cpetty1@umbc.edu)
  3. Call Chere Petty's cellphone (301-367-8408)
