Hello everyone, my name is Samuel Haile.  I was born in Portsmouth, VA, but moved to Mississippi when I was two years old.  I was raised in Jackson, MS and graduated from Jackson State University on May 13, 2006.  I was a Biology:pre medicine major/Chemistry minor.  I am currently in the Biological Sciences program here at UMBC.   I am interested in going into industry upon completion of my Ph.D.  I would like to use molecular and cellular biology research as a way of better understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in cancer.  As a part of past research experiences, I have looked at signaling pathways and their deregulation in breast cancer patients.  I have also done toxicity studies with leukemia and liver cancer.  The cancer cells all share the characteristic of rapid proliferation.  At the current moment, I am interested in gaining a better understanding of cancer biology from an immunological standpoint.  Besides cunducting research at my undergraduate institution, I have done research at Indiana University School of Medicine, Brown University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  The combination of these research experiences have all contributed in their own unique way to my love for research.  If anyone wants to see what kind of research projects I have been involved in you can click here to take a look at an excerpt from my CV.

In my spare time, I enjoy going to the gym and logging into facebook.  For those of you with facebook accounts, my screen name is Sammie Haile.  Please feel free to add me as a friend.

Also, I have recently returned from Ethiopia where my family is from.  I am the first person in my family born in America!  This summer I was fortunate enough to travel to Ethiopia for the first time.  While there I saw many historical sights and met many family members for the first time, including my 96 year old grand father.  I spent one month there and will definately be heading back after I graduate (if not sooner).  The following picture is of me in front of a church built out of stone in Lalibela.
