Each student will provide an annotated bibliography summarizing the content of the papers that will form the basis of the project. The bibliographic entries should describe peer reviewed research articles only; reviews, newspaper articles or Internet resources are not acceptable. You can use these types of resources as background material, but they should not be the principle basis for the work.
Each bibliography entry should consist of the following:
1. A complete bibliographic entry for the paper.
The bibliographic entry should be in one of the forms listed below depending on the type of resource
Journal article (Authors. Title. Journal. Year Volume:pages)
Watson JD, Crick FH. Molecular structure of nucleic acids; a structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid. Nature. 1953 171:737-738.
Book section (Authors. Title. In Book Title (Editors, eds.) (Publisher, City) Pages.)
Pauling L. 1957. The probability of errors in the process of synthesis of protein molecules. In: Festschrift Arthur Stoll (Birkhauser A, ed.) (Birkhauser Verlag, Basel) 597–602.
Contact me if you have a resource that you don't know how to reference.
2. A description of the major topics covered in the paper. This may include a brief description of how the paper relates to the project subject. The description should not exceed 250 words. Avoid lengthy descriptions of technical details in the paper. When describing experimental results include only as much detail as is necessary for a scientifically literate person to be able to understand the results.
3. A universal resource locator (URL) linking to the PubMed database or other internet resource for the paper. This link need not be to a PDF of the paper (many papers you will want to use will not be available online). If there is no internet site for the paper please say so (I'll check to verify that is true).
The annotated bibliography should be submitted to me electronically (as an E-mail attachment) in either of two formats: Microsoft Word or PDF document. No other formats will be accepted.
Deviation from the above described format for the entries will result in grade deductions.
Due date: the assignment will be due by 5 PM on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. Assignments turned in after that will receive no credit unless you have previously arranged to be late. Lateness will be allowed only for good cause.
Grading: successful completion of the annotated bibliography will count for 10% of the final grade for the project.
